About This Course

Writing Techniques is designed for first-year undergraduate students to develop the fundamental writing skills required for academic success. The course provides a solid foundation in English grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph writing, enabling students to produce clear, coherent, and well-organized texts. Students are introduced to the essential principles of academic writing, including clarity, accuracy, cohesion, and coherence, while learning to express their ideas effectively in written English.

The course is organised into progressive learning units that cover sentence structure, academic language and style, paragraph organisation, and the writing process. Students learn how to construct effective topic sentences, develop supporting details, write concluding sentences, and organise ideas logically using appropriate cohesive devices. They also explore different paragraph types, with particular emphasis on narrative and descriptive writing.

The course adopts a process-oriented approach that emphasizes planning, drafting, revising, and editing. Through practical writing activities, collaborative learning, and continuous feedback, students gradually develop the ability to write accurate, coherent, and well-structured paragraphs while building the confidence and skills needed for more advanced academic writing.
