About This Course

Writing is considered an essential component of higher education (HE), as it is almost the main means of assessing and grading students’ work. Moreover, it is essential for accomplishing various academic tasks such as writing assignments, research projects, and dissertations. At the tertiary level, Written Expression is a module that aims to develop writing skills in general and essay writing in particular. More specifically, it equips learners with the necessary skills to write effectively and academically. This course emphasizes the different conventions of academic writing, particularly formality, clarity, and organization, as well as the different parts of the essay and its various types. In addition, this course focuses on summarizing and paraphrasing techniques. It also provides learners with opportunities for intensive practice both inside and outside the classroom. Overall, this course aims to:
1. In terms of knowledge, introduce students to the importance of academic writing and
its conventions.
2. In terms of skills, initiate students into academic writing and the different types of
five-paragraph essays.
3. In terms of attitudes, encourage students to improve their academic writing skills. 

Requirements

The successful completion of this course requires that students possess the following prerequisites:

  • Understanding and mastering the sentence structure, punctuation, and common grammar rules.

  • Having sufficient vocabulary to express ideas clearly in written English.

  • Ability to read and comprehend academic texts.

  • Capacity to identify main ideas, supporting details, and paragraph structure.

  • Familiarity with writing simple short paragraphs.

  • Ability to organize ideas in a coherent sequence.

  • Basic familiarity with different types of paragraphs (narrative, descriptive).

  • Basic cohesion and coherence skills.

Course Staff

Dr. Souad Boubekka is a lecturer and researcher in English Language Teaching (ELT) with extensive experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at the university level. Her academic interests include academic writing, didactics of English, research methodology, and technology-enhanced language learning. She has designed and taught various English courses for undergraduate students at the department of English. Her research focuses on collaborative writing, digital competencies in education, and factors influencing teacher.'s professional development.

Dr. Boubekka is committed for creating engaging and learner-centered educational experiences that foster language proficiency, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Through this course, she aims to provide learners with practical knowledge and skills that can be applied effectively in academic and professional contexts.
